Mobile Broadband a Better Option than WI-Fi

February 27, 2010

Small business enterprises need to cut down their overhead expenses in order to be competitive. For this, experts always suggest minimising costs that are recurring in nature. It now seems that using mobile broadband services in place of WI-FI could be one important area of savings.

This information is based on a report giving the results of a recent survey conducted by a telecom and media analyst firm named Analysys Mason. According to the report, small businesses can save an estimated two thousand pounds every year by switching over to mobile broadband from Wi-Fi. Further, savings per employee could be to the tune of £580 annually. The cost of mobile broadband per employee is generally not more than £10 per month.

This savings can be maximised by opting for special packages offered by service providers. Internet Service providers generally have packages for small businesses where along with monetary benefits, one also gets the added advantage of greater download limits with improved technical and customer support. For instance, to attract small businesses, BT offers free broadband connectivity to businesses using a broadband package of sub-£30 per month.

Steve Hilton, Principle Analyst at Analysys Mason, is of the opinion that technology expenses at various levels have a big cumulative effect on the finances of a company. This expense can be reduced by adopting simple measures like using mobile connectivity with a payback period of six months. In addition to saving money, a mobile broadband connection gives better coverage and is also more reliable.

Internet Calls Are a Great Way to Reduce Your Phone Bill

February 1, 2010

The majority of people with a cell phone absolutely won’t change mobile phone networks even though by moving to a new one they could benefit from much lower phone bills and benefit from more features and services, such as the ability to make internet calls. Too many of their family and friends know their mobile phone number and they do not want to go through the rigmarole of changing cell phone numbers and having to let everyone know what number they can now be contacted on. If you need to lower the amount you spend on phone calls, then looking into taking advantage of VoIP is something you should definitely do.

The remarkable thing about apps like Truphone is that they function with a wide range of mobile phones, and enable you to keep your own number as well as giving you a convenient alternative to make cheaper outbound calls. IP Telephony software app that enables mobile users to make VoIP calls and send SMS’s over the internet. The VoIP industry commonly refer to such apps as mobile voip, sip client, mobile sip, internet dialers, voip softphone or sip softphone.

When internet connections weren’t as fast in the early days of VoIP there was a slower take-up of internet telephony because of the low grade sound quality when compared to a standard phone line. This has all changed however as broadband penetration increased and the cost of internet connections have gone down. Redirecting your mobile calls over the internet allows you to save on your phone bills because by routing the calls over the internet it is possible to circumvent the charges usually incurred by your mobile phone provider for making use of their infrastructure.

Sky and TalkTalk Uncertain about Flexibility of BT’s High Speed Network

January 14, 2010

Sky and Carphone Warehouse have shown their enthusiasm for BT’s proposed £1.5bn high speed broadband network and have been suggesting improvements for functional efficiency of the plan. It is also worth noting that both the companies are potential customers for the broadband products that BT will be offering soon.

According to the plan, this new fibre optic network of BT, which has been scheduled to start working from 2010, has not yet been offered to any of the operators in wholesale deal. This network will provide the customers with approximately ten times higher download speeds than they have been using as of now.

According to Dougal Scott, Sky’s deputy head of strategy, Sky will keep working with BT and provide them with valuable advice on improvement of the products. In his interview to the Financial Times, Scott also added that if BT wants to receive appropriate returns on its investments, it would have to ensure that the product motivates prospective wholesale partners.

As of now, both TalkTalk (Carphone Warehouse) and Sky are uncertain about the capacity of BT’s network (to be provided by BT Openreach) to enable competitors to provide different products. In fact, Carphone’s chief executive Charles Dunstone has already said that the Openreach product is not up to mark right now.

In a response to the statement of Carphone’s executive, a BT spokesperson said that Openreach has conducted a successful pilot and it is confident about delivering the promised speed, flexibility and reliability. However, BT is also trying to bring in more flexibility if the market requires so.

BT has also confirmed that the completion date for its new network has been brought forward by a year to bring it in time for the Olympics to be held in London.

Anti Piracy Law Could Go Against EU Law, According to Expert Opinion

December 31, 2009

The anti-piracy provisions in the digital economy bill are drawing flak once more, this time from experts, who believe that if the provisions are passed as law, they might invalidate the provisions of the European Union regulations.

The UK’s digital economy bill has some clauses that allow for strict action against those found abusing copyright laws of the country by illegally sharing or distributing copyrighted material. These measures were thought necessary to fight growing piracy on the internet that is seriously affecting the entertainment business. However, these measures are now drawing huge protests from many sectors, including the industry.

The latest criticism of these measures has come from an expert who claims that they are not in conformance with EU laws. Internet law expert professor Lilian Edwards says that these provisions could seriously underrate the existing EU laws as they hold providers responsible for the actions of users. As it was pointed out earlier this month, mobile broadband networks use a common IP address for a number of users, and hence identifying an offender among these would be an impossible task.

Now, professor Edwards has also pointed out that as the bill allows for holding network owners liable for user actions, the concept of free market will be completely impossible in this sector.

This will specially be the case for businesses that allow users to connect to internet using free WiFi. If business owners are going to be fined or penalised for guests who use WiFi illegally, it would not be viable for them offer this as an option at all. Even WiFi at home can be used by an unauthorised neighbour. To combat this, EU’s E-Commerce Directive, which is also a UK law, liberates an unaware owner of charges of illegal file sharing activities carried out by others using his connection.

If you want to know more about mobile broadband or to know the current range of mobile broadband devices and take a look at the Broadband Genie comparison table. The website maintains a database of all the latest laptop deals (including contract laptops) and broadband prices.

High-Speed Internet Access Still out of Reach for Many Households

June 9, 2009

The government has so far failed to fully address the issue of a high speed broadband connectivity across Britain, with a sizeable proportion of the British population still waiting for 2Mb broadband connections. It has also now been revealed that many of these homes may be left out of the universal 2Mb scheme promised under Digital Britain due to several outstanding issues.

Slow broadband zones are not just restricted to rural areas. There are urban areas on the fringes of London and other major cities where internet access is agonizingly slow. Though high-speed fibre cables are within close proximity of many of these areas, they are unable to get a faster service owing to the deadlock caused by ownership disputes and other expansion related issues with many service providers. The difficulty in expansion presented by landmarks like the M1 motorway has also left many without access to a fast service.

A recent study conducted by BT estimated that only 7 percent of homes in Britain would be left without 2Mb broadband connections once the Digital Britain proposals were implemented. But the latest data collected by BBC News Online shows that for around 3 million homes in the UK, broadband is either beyond their reach or very slow, and no solution to their plight seems to be in sight. If you’re considering switching broadband provider arm yourself with plenty of information from these broadband reviews.

Clearly, a lot remains to be done, including expansion of satellite and mobile broadband, to bridge this connection gap if the government wishes its 2Mb broadband-for-all plan to see the light of day.

Business Places Now Have Simplified Public Wi-Fi – Thanks to BT

February 16, 2009

As the result of a welcome move by BT, small and medium businesses across UK can now look forward to easy-to-setup free access public Wi-Fi hotspots.

There are already such hotspots in some places, but the setup so far has been very complicated. The new package, called the BT Business Total Broadband hub, brings simplicity to the process of setting up a free broadband Wi-Fi hotspot for customers.

The new feature is also being offered to existing BT Business customers. All they have to do is upgrade their Broadband hub firmware.

Now businesses can easily share their broadband connection with their customers. Moreover, they do not have to worry about slow speeds either. BT made it clear that the traffic from the free network will always have a lower priority than the original business network. Therefore, business owners can look forward to a smooth traffic flow even during business hours.

Businesses like dentists, eating places and cafes will benefit greatly from this. Customers are likely to spend more time and hence bring more business to the Wi-Fi owner if they stay connected at these places. The owners can provide free access through their own connection or sell BT Openzone vouchers to their customers.

Bill Murphy echoed these sentiments saying that there is a lot of value that businesses gain from providing these Wi-Fi hotspots and it is a win-win situation for both businesses and their customers.
